Welcome to the X-Ray Structure Biology Laboratory!

X-ray crystallography is one of the most powerful techniques to study the three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules. The multi-user X-ray core facility at the Institute of Molecular Biology provides the instrumentation and expertise from X-ray diffraction data collection and processing to structure solution and refinement. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software to facilitate crystallography groups to determine their structures. We also provide periodical training courses in every stage of structure determination process for researchers who are interested in solving the structures of their favorite proteins.

The facility has a Rigaku Ultimate HomeLab™ protein crystallography system which would enable data collection on the widest range of protein crystal samples. The foundation for the versatility of this X-ray diffraction system is the FR-E+ SuperBright™ microfocus generator. When coupled with Osmic™ VariMax™ optics, the Ultimate HomeLab provides the highest possible usable flux available in a home laboratory source. Using the latest in microfocus technology, the FR-E+ SuperBright has a 70 x 70 micron anode focal spot. When coupled with an Osmic VariMax optic, this uniquely small focal spot leads to a small, monochromatic beam on the sample which is the perfect complement to optimize signal-to-noise for the small crystals used in today’s protein laboratories. The usable flux produced by the Ultimate HomeLab is up to 35 times greater than that of a conventional generator and optic, enabling the collection of quality data on small crystals that diffract too weakly on standard home sources.
