The “SMART” training provided in the MCB program which is sponsored by the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB), Academia Sinica in cooperation with the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), National Defense Medical Center will help you build up your professional career.

 

ADMISSION

The MCB Program admits students to the fall semester only. Students with backgrounds in biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, genetics, anatomy, chemistry, physics and related fields are welcome to apply. Applicants holding a B.S. degree from an accredited institution, or who will obtain the degree within one semester, can apply for admission.

 

Admission Requirment

1. Certificate of Bachelor degree 

Official records are defined as original documents issued by the institution that bear the actual signature of the Registrar and the seal of the issuing institution.

2. Academic Transcripts 

A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for all college work (4.0 = A) is preferred. An explanation for any non-standard grading system is strongly recommended.

 

 

3. English Requirement 

Students from non-English -speaking countries are expected to read, write, comprehend, and speak English in order to be admitted for graduate study. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit the score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Please note that institutional TOEFL will not be accepted, only ETS International TOEFL will be accepted. Applicants in Taiwan may take the General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) administered by the Language Training and Testing Center. Applicants are required to pass both two parts of the test and submit their High-intermediate level certificate when applying for admission.

The recommended requirements of TOFEL, IELTS and GEPT are summarized as follows:

All above test scores must be taken within the past two years.

The test of English proficiency can be exempted for applicants graduated from universities where English is the primary language of instruction, if the applicants provide an official certification issued by the Office

 

4. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) 

We encourage the applicants to take GRE's General Test. Alternatively, the applicants should provide us with supplementary information (e.g. undergraduate or Master's thesis, research publication, description of research experiences) that can demonstrate your potential in research.

After reviewing all the supporting documents mentioned above, candidates passing the first screening will be invited for an interview. Local candidates will be asked to come to Taipei for interviews, whereas international students will be video interviewed.

 

 

Costs and Funding

TIGP offers rigorous, interdisciplinary education at affordable prices. Once admitted, each TIGP student will receive a monthly stipend of NT$34,000 (around USD$1,133) for the first year. Additionally, the support will be extended to two more years for students who perform well academically. In subsequent years (from the 4th year), the thesis advisor will be responsible for the financial support.

 

Tuition and Costs

  • Credit Fee NTD $1,342/per credit
  • Students Group Insurance NTD $799/yr

Tuition payments for the MCB Ph.D. program are made twice a year. You will be notified to pay at the appropriate time. It is your personal responsibility to complete payment on time.

 

 

2. Health Insurance 

All international students can apply to enroll in the Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Program through the partner school after a continuous residence within Taiwan for 6 months.

  • Fee NTD $826 /per month
  • Payment is calculated separately from the tuition fee.

 

3. Living and Housing Cost

The cost of living here is much lower than those at US and Europe, which is approximately twice the living expense in Nankung, Taipei. Most students are supported by their thesis advisors in subsequent years.

Options include on-campus housing and off-campus housing. On-campus self-catering student dormitory providing single study bedrooms is available to TIGP students at reasonable costs (for details please visit TIGP dorm website). Off-campus private housing is generally more expensive. Rents for off-campus apartments range from NT$ 5,000 - 15,000 per month.
