Mathematical Modeling in Biology for Fall 2025

Organizer: Dr. Wei-Hsiang Lin &Dr. Jian-Geng Chiou

  • Prerequisite: Calculus (undergraduate level)
  • This course focuses on concepts and techniques in systems biology and applied mathematics. We will introduce basic ODE and PDE models in biology, and analyze them in equation or with numerical simulation (Python codes will be provided, but students are welcome to use any programming languages for projects).
  • This course has problem sets every week. Problem sets will not be graded, but answers will be provided. There will be office hours every two weeks.
  • Grading is based on Midterm (50%), and Final exam or Final project (50%). Student can decide to participate either final exam, final project, or both. If student participate both, higher grade will be used.
  • Midterm and Final exam are based on the problem sets. Exams are open book but no electronic devices.
  • Student can choose to do Final project (50%, optional) for the class. The topic can be original research or extension of some papers. For master or PhD students, you are welcome to develop your own thesis research in the Final project.
  • Reference books (optional): 1. Ordinary differential equation (?). 2. Nonlinear dynamics and chaos (Strogatz). 3. Mathematical biology (?)
  • Reference videos (linear algebra, etc): https://biocircuits.github.io/
