Glia in the Drosophila Visual System

Our research interests focus on the regulation of glia differentiation and the role of glia in the development and maintenance of the Drosophila visual system. We have developed an ex vivo culture system for the long-term culture of fly eye disc, allowing us to follow and manipulate glia migration, proliferation and differentiation during the development of the fly visual system. We are focusing on a special glia subtype, the wrapping glia. We are studying how its lineage is segregated from the other glia lineages, how its differentiation is spatially and temporally regulated, and how does it affect the function and axon guidance of the photoreceptor neurons.
